One of the greatest pleasures of
editing a knitting magazine is being
surrounded by makers. There is pro-
found sweetness to this realization,
a feeling of coming home. In a world
that sometimes seems to rely on dis-
posability, on quick and cheap com-
modities and experiences, the knitters
I work with every day—like all knitters,
mindful, thoughtful, wildly creative—are
a band of brothers. We happy few!
And how many faces and shades of knitter I’ve seen in that band!
The consummate technicians, who can knit every detail of a sweater
in their heads before most of us can scribble a sketch. The artists,
who regard stitches and textures and colors as raw materials for big
statements. The historians, the ethnographers, the costumers, the
fashion mavens. You may all approach needles and yarn from di- er-
ent angles, but we recognize each other in those fi rst few stitches that
we cast on, know the sense of possibility in a waiting ball of wool or a
blank chart. We know that each new project, every new-to-you design
or technique or material, is an opportunity to try a di- erent kind of
knitting, to be a di- erent kind of knitter.
With this fourth issue of
knit.wear
, we’re celebrating knits that
explore and showcase the integral, elemental beauty of knitted
fabric:
rings textures into focus within
desaturated frames.
oks at line and
silhouette.
lores versatile shapes.
rns surface design into structural
design. And
akes graphic color mod-
ern. We’re exploring, too, how details can make or break simple
knits: We’re looking at topics that range from an innovative new
twist on intarsia
to a thoughtful meditation on hemline
knitting’s intersection with art and ready-to-
wea
I’ve been lucky enough to get to know so many kinds of knitters,
and to see our band grow from a happy few to a dynamic, ever-
changing legion. And I’ve found inspiration where we diverge and
even more where we connect. We knitters, we learn all the time,
invent, unearth,
discover
. We add beauty and usefulness to the
world, clothe and warm those around us, and spread authenticity,
intention, and appreciation for human skill every day. Handmade
values, knitted values. The real ties that bind.
